Some Things Never Change
A song about the stabilizing effect of love relationships in our lives
Last month I took my daughter
Back to visit my old home town
Like always we saw grandma
But then we took a walk around
Down winding College Avenue
To old Main Street far below
I noticed how things have changed
Since I grew up here long ago
I showed her my old grade school
The same one grandma went to
The desks and teachers are all gone
And the play ground is empty too
My daughter asked why do things
change
Why isn’t school there anymore
She wished she could go back in time
And see things like they were before
Life is a gift we are given
That’s the way it is
Change happens everyday
So we have to change to live
Chorus
I said
But as this
world evolves
Some things never change
Love steadies our lives
My love for you remains the same
Some things never change
We
walked the tracks of the B&O
America’s first railroad
A red caboose stands at the depot
But that railroad vanished long ago
My grandfather was a contractor
And built a lot of stores on Main Street
The barber shop where I got crew cuts
Is just a store selling antiques
I got cold as the sun went down
And I could feel my old home town
Halloween paintings in store windows
Xmas wreaths on telephone poles
I wish that things could stay the
same
All my friends were here and hadn’t changed
I wanted those feelings back again
Then my daughter tugged on my hand
As we walked back up the hill
She said she thinks she understands
We’re all here for just a little while
Don’t be scared Dad I’ll hold your hand
Chorus
She said
But as this
world evolves
Some things never change
Love steadies our lives
My love for you remains the same
Some things never change
